1000’s of heat pumps from multiple brands recalled: Heat remains on even during cooling

Government of Canada release:

Health Canada, in conjunction with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) and Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing, L.P. (DCT), has announced a recall of Daikin, Amana, and Goodman-branded heat pumps. This recall is due to a risk of excessive heat exposure caused by power interruptions.

Issue

A power interruption can result in the heat pumps providing heat when power resumes, even if the thermostat is set to cooling mode. This malfunction poses a risk of excessive heat exposure. To date, no incidents of overheating or injuries have been reported in Canada or the United States.

What to Do

If your unit has not received the corrective update and you do not need air conditioning immediately, turn off and stop using the recalled product. Consumers should contact Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing, L.P. for more information. Units connected to WiFi can receive a remote software update. Those without WiFi should register for the recall at Goodman MFG to receive update instructions.
