Be sure to follow the “HELMET” guide

Be sure to follow the “HELMET” guide With the onset of our summer weather, more children are out riding their bicycles.

The RCMP would like to remind kids that the following “HELMET” guide will go a long way to remind them to wear their helmets and ride safe:

H – Hands are for the handlebars and steering.
E – Excuses don’t exist for not wearing a helmet
L – Let drivers know if you are planning on turning right or left by using hand signals.
M – Mandatory safety equipment on a bike includes your helmet.
E – Ensure your parents know where you are going.
T -Tell your friends to wear their helmet.

“A little prevention can go a long way in keeping you safe,” says Cpl. Scott MacRae of Halifax District RCMP. “When riding your bicycle, wear your helmet and follow the rules of the road.”

In 1997, 15-year-old Amy Linders left her house for a bicycle ride. As bicycle helmet regulations had just come into effect, Amy’s mom called her back and made Amy wear a bicycle helmet. Reluctantly, Amy put her helmet on. As she was returning home from her ride, Amy was hit by a pickup truck. Her helmet played a major role in saving her life.

Message from Tim Outhit on state of Bedford Highway

Message from Tim Outhit on state of Bedford Highway Bedford & area residents – one of the more common questions I have received by telephone call or email lately is the condition of the Bedford Highway.

Our main street has been completely repaved within Bedford over the past few years. The rough area around Fisherman’s Market and Larry Uteck is not within my district, but Councillor Hum and I have worked together with HRM staff on this issue.

I am pleased to re-confirm that this area will be repaved this summer. It was purposely left “as is” for a couple of years, as it was anticipated that Halifax Water would be upgrading and expanding water services in that area. HRM did not want to have to do the work twice. Halifax Water is not moving forward with their proposed work, so HRM will now begin paving!

You will also see paving projects on the Hammonds Plains Road and Douglas Drive this summer....

Two men rescued from capsized boat

Two men rescued from capsized boat At approximately 3:51 p.m. yesterday afternoon, RCMP Halifax District responded to a 911 call of a capsized boat off of Peggy’s Cove Road, Highway 333.

The boaters, two men ages 50 and 63 both from Hammonds Plains, were rescued by a passing sailboat and a row boat when the 12-foot aluminum boat they were traveling in capsized.

The men were transported by EHS to the QEII and Cobequid Hospitals for observation. The RCMP can confirm the men were wearing life vests at the time. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing of the boat is continuing....

Citizen satisfaction survey results

Citizen satisfaction survey results As a follow-up to today’s Board of Police Commissioners’ meeting, HRM Partners in Policing are releasing the results of their 2012 citizen satisfaction survey which is conducted annually as part of Corporate Research Associates’ (CRA) second quarter Urban Report.

CRA conducted the survey with a representative sample of HRM citizens from May 2 to 8, 2012. Results are based on a sample of 400 adult residents in HRM and are accurate to within plus or minus 4.9 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times. The results are as follows:

- 87% are mostly or completely satisfied with the quality of policing in their community.
- 86% are mostly or completely satisfied with police visibility and presence.
- 87% are somewhat or completely confident police will respond to emergencies in a timely and efficient manner.
- 82% are mostly or completely satisfied with the peace and order in local neighbourhoods
- 87% feel very or completely safe in the community where they live
- 89% feel very or completely safe in the local areas where they go for shopping, recreation and work.

HRM Partners in Policing are encouraged by the positive results and believe our crime reduction strategy is making a difference. We continue to focus on hot spots policing; deploy our Guns & Gangs Team, Quick Response and Street Crime Units to target the criminal element; monitor those who are on court imposed conditions; and put officers in close contact with the community to address crime as well as quality-of-life issues....

Councillor Outhit updates us on repairs to Paper Mill Dam

Councillor Outhit updates us on repairs to Paper Mill Dam Bedford residents – I am receiving calls and email regarding Paper Mill Lake and Scott Saunders Park closure this summer.

While the Dam project, and the draining of the lake is behind schedule, it is still the Annapolis Group’s intention to proceed with this project this summer.

While the lake is drained, HRM will conduct overdue repairs and upgrades to the park.

I will keep you advised of any changes or any further delays....
