growing wheatgrass

growing wheatgrass

Before we move to the farm and start a “real” garden, I wanted to help my boys experience the process of planting seeds, watch them germinate and grow but on a smaller scale. Growing wheatgrass indoors seemed easy enough!

growing wheatgrass

I grabbed a package of potting soil and hard red wheatgrass at the whole foods market (I skipped over the $60 wheatgrass specific planter…um…really, are things like that necessary? Getting back to basics shouldn’t cost that much…) and got to work with two of my best helpers along with a few ceramic bowls and kitchen spoons.

joyous news for a mason jar hoarder: ball® heritage collection pint jar | limited edition blue mason jars!

I have an entire cupboard dedicated to my stash of mason jars. I love them for pretty well everything…organizing my spices, bulk dry goods, green smoothies, homemade scrubs, cotton balls, as a vase, for pencils, crayons and really any type of art supplies. You could easily spot a couple of them in any room of my house…I adore them!

joyous news for a mason jar hoarder: ball® heritage collection pint jar | limited edition blue mason jars!

Growing up, we used mason drinking jars and I’ve been keeping my eye out for a new shiny set to stock the cupboard with.  There’s just something about a glass of homemade lemonade (or margarita)  in a mason jar. *swoon*.

SO, I’m thrilled to see that 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the first series of jars designed by Ball brothers!! Each jar is intended to be better than the one before.

I do wish that the lids were more vintage-y but they’re still gorgeous and will be beautiful lined up on the kitchen windowsill at The Homemade Farm or better yet, used for their intended purpose once we get a garden going! The Perfect Masons sell for $12.99US for a set of 6, but I have no idea when they’ll be available in Canada. I’ll be regularly checking Canadian Tire and Walmart for them and stock up if I spot them!!

Anyone else have a mason jar obsession???

spending spring break with indigo! #legoduploplay

This week during spring break I will be spending my mornings running my fingers over hundreds of beautiful, elegant and vintage inspired items as I dream of how I’ll bring The Homemade Farm back to life again. Yes, strolling through one of the most inspiration stores I know and love – Indigo. And a latte will be involved.

spending spring break with indigo! #legoduploplay

Oh wait – spring break at Indigo is for the kids?  :)

spending spring break with indigo! #legoduploplay

In Alberta during spring break you can sign up and visit the store each morning at 11am from the 25th to the 29th for spring break in-store activities like to listen to story time, make a craft and play some games in the kid section.

(Don’t mind the rats nest. It’s our weekend hair.)

During their play time I might have slipped away to play Easter Bunny and bought this.

And this old fashioned licorice.

Indigo is widely known as Canada’s largest purveyor of ideas and inspiration. Each store is full with gorgeous items – many of which are eco-friendly and the toy section has tons of old school favorites as well as the latest gadgets for modern kids (and of course the best selection of scratch ‘n sniff stickers.) My boys love the games section and were instantly obsessed with Halloween Sound Machines they discovered. Because of course 16 terrifying halloween sound effects at the touch of a button is the best thing ever when you’re 5. (and 3 and want to be just like big brother).

Spring break on Wednesday is Ready, Set, Lego! This month, Indigo has a promotion going on for LEGO DUPLO, with 20% off all LEGO DUPLO products online and in-store until March 31st! A great time to stock up, especially if you’re planning a Lego party and need some fantastic party favors!

spending spring break with indigo! #legoduploplay

What are your plans for spring break? Other than the fun filled week at Indigo we’ll be doing lots of catching up on sleep and a fun activity each day. We started the week off with glow golfing and tomorrow will be a visit to Indigo and a movie date with my boys!

Enjoy your week, mamas!

ayurveda + himalayan pink salt vs. regular white table salt or sea salt

For thousands of years of Ayurvedic medicinal tradition, Himalayan Salt has been the one salt that is considered truly therapeutic. Himalayan Salt contains the full spectrum of 84 minerals and trace elements. It is an unrefined, unprocessed raw salt that is hand-mined from abundant salt caves that were formed over 200 million years ago as ocean salt settled in certain geologic pockets around the earth. I recently took part in an Ayurvedic workshop on the elemental approach to foods and tried Himalayan pink salt for the first time. I was so surprised by the taste and of course the pretty pink color! I was also impressed to find out that Himalayan Salt can actually take care of dehydration due to the low sodium and high electrolyte count – the opposite of what iodized white salt does! A pinch of Himalayan salt in a glass of lemon water is the perfect drink to rehydrate with!

ayurveda + himalayan pink salt vs. regular white table salt or sea salt

Back to the nitty gritty. Regular white table salt is made via a chemical compound: sodium chloride. It’s highly processed and chemically “cleaned” so that it’s left only as sodium in the end.  Oh, but they do add in extra iodine (artificially) so that you’re getting at least one mineral ;)

And sea salt, which I have been using for ages thinking it was superior to regular white  salt, is in fact, just regular table salt. The term “sea salt” is essentially meaningless. White processed salt can still be called “sea salt” even though it is devoid of full-spectrum sea minerals. Unless you’re buying a pure, organic, non-refined sea salt, but keep in mind that oceans are often polluted by oil spills, dioxins and mercury so you may want to switch over to the pretty pink stuff.

ayurveda + himalayan pink salt vs. regular white table salt or sea salt

According to Ayurvedic medicine, here are the benefits:

Regulates the water content throughout your body.

  • Promotes a healthy pH balance in your cells, particularly your brain cells.
  • Promotes blood sugar health.
  • Promotes the absorption of food particles through your intestinal tract.
  • Supports respiratory health.
  • Promotes sinus health.
  • Prevention of muscle cramps.
  • Promotes bone strength; ensures optimum delivery of the key minerals for good bone density.
  • Encourages healthy sleep patterns-it naturally regulates sleep.
  • Supports your libido.
  • Promotes vascular health.
  • In conjunction with water it regulates blood pressure.
  • Serves as a source of balanced electrolytes.
  • Natural treatment for athletes’ foot.
  • Oral hygiene.
  • Helps reduce the signs of aging.

I’ll be sharing some self-remedies using Himalayan salt so keep an eye out for new #modernmombeauty posts!

the best recipe for how to to make your own homemade super soft squishy play dough! And what’s really in store-bought “play-doh”…

According to the Play-Doh manufacture, this brand name product is composed of water, a starch-based binder, a retrogradation inhibitor, salt, lubricant, surfactant, preservative, hardener, humectant, fragrance, and color. A petroleum additive gives the compound a smooth feel, and borax prevents mold from developing. How can something that’s so seemingly simple contain such a long list almost entirely made up of chemicals?

I’ll be sharing more on the concerns of petroleum based dyes and additives, but until then, just skip the store bought brand all together and make your own, mamas. It’s beyond easy…I promise.

the best recipe for how to to make your own homemade super soft squishy play dough! And what’s really in store-bought “play-doh”…

I have been making this play dough recipe for ages and believe me when I say it’s the best one I’ve tried. It’s so good that my search for the perfect homemade squishy play dough is over.

The velvety texture and squishiness feels so much softer than regular play dough and the smell of it immediately takes me back to my childhood…my preschool teacher was obviously making her own play dough! I love adding in several drops of peppermint essential oil and a spoonful of glitter to make it even more of a sensory experience for my children.

the best recipe for how to to make your own homemade super soft squishy play dough! And what’s really in store-bought “play-doh”…

the best recipe for how to to make your own homemade super soft squishy play dough! And what’s really in store-bought “play-doh”…

- 1 cup flour

- 1 cup water

- 1/4 cup salt

- 2 tsp. cream of tartar

- 1 tbsp. vegetable oil

- natural food coloring (just a few drops)

- essential oils (optional)

- glitter (optional)

the best recipe for how to to make your own homemade super soft squishy play dough! And what’s really in store-bought “play-doh”… Dump everything into a pot and stir. Place over medium/low heat and keep stirring until it forms a ball. Once it’s all stuck together in a big ball, dump it on your counter and start to knead. If you find it really sticky, just add a little extra flour. Store it in an airtight container after it’s cooled and it’ll keep for quite a while.

*Tips:

- I like to make a double batch so we all have a big piece to play with when I bring it out. I don’t bother making multiple colors because my boys just mix them together. I usually whip up a new batch every few weeks or when the toast crumbs and lint have taken over it. ;)

- If your pot looks a mess, don’t worry. Let it soak for a bit and it’ll all come right off.

Enjoy!

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm… I remember years ago when I first started naturalmommie.com. Back then my about me page said something like “I don’t exactly have chickens running around the backyard…but maybe one day…”

Well, here we are. At that one day.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

It’s always been a dream to live on a farm and raise my little boys surrounded by trees with room to roam. A place to run wild where they didn’t have to be conscious of a perfectly manicured sidewalk. Where they could do what boys should do without raised eyebrows and without worrying about playing and yelling too loud in the backyard because the neighbors are eating their dinner 7 feet away.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

I grew up in the sticks. A tiny little rural community on a farm with cows and horses roaming behind our house. Hours upon hours were spent collecting tadpole eggs in ice-cream buckets from the marsh, chasing my jelly sandals down the swirly brook, watching calves being born, counting fireflies, seeing my sister riding her pony for the first time and laughing at our little farmdog, Lady, getting fat from lapping up the cows milk when nobody was looking.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

But nowdays, living the country life while being just minutes outside the city means a million dollar price tag. Not exactly attainable. So, while I prayed for the “perfect” place for our family, my husband kept an eye out for new listings and the day after our latest “I reeeeally want to move to the country” conversation, a 20 acre farm fell into our lap.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

There was drive after drive to the farm with lots of discussions about renovating the 1940′s farmhouse or building a new one, subdividing the 20 acres or keeping them, what type of fencing would we build and ah! would we need a gun?… all those questions and none yet with a concrete answer, we decided the details could be worked out along the way.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

And so we bought it.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

Everytime we drive to the farm it’s a certain sense of peace; a calmness. Everyone breathes a little slower. Deeper. It just feels right. That’s not to say this hasn’t been a bit of a scary process. Having to sell our almost brand new home to move into a smaller, run down farmhouse with one little bathroom is daunting. The night we put our house up for sale I was in tears after thinking about what we were willing to give up for an old farm.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

An eco-friendly tankless hot water tank for a well?  A walk-in closet for…no closet? A huge soaker tub for a baby pink toilet and tub?  Three living rooms for one? What about our playroom? What about our home-gym? What about our walk-in pantry? What about our heated garage?

When it comes down to it? None of it really matters.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

We need space. A big garden.  Wild flowers. Fresh air. Enormous trees to build forts in. A place where my boys can get dirty, kick their boots off in the mud room and cozy up next to a fire. The real kind.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

Fresh eggs (eventually). A huge porch for a swing to rock on next to my husband while holding hands and listening to the sounds of nature. Big evening fires in the backyard all summer long.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

Falling asleep to the sound of coyotes and owls.  Wooden barn floors. Nooks and crannies to explore, poke through, and build stories around.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

It’s actually quite perfect.

from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

And of course every farm needs a name. Ours? from zero to twenty: the day we bought a farm…

modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy!

modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy!

My Greek genes gave me and nearly every member of the Greek side of the family dark, dark locks…which I do love when I have a nice tan in the summer but overall my favorite hair to have is blonde.  And this isn’t exactly easy as a naturally dark (dark!) brunette gal. I do really well at those orangey, brassy shades that no woman wants – those I can maintain no problem – but it’s the sandy, creamy, pretty blonde that is almost impossible for me to keep for more than a few weeks. The toner fades and my beautiful blonde starts to look ruddy and brassy and is less than stellar. I suppose I could go in for a new toner every two weeks but let’s face it – that just adds to the regularly scheduled upkeep that is needed to maintain life as a blonde. And really, should you have to get new toner put on every few weeks to maintain your new hair?

modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy! When Ivory Noir Salon announced that they were carrying the new blonde color system from Schwarzkopf Professional that promised beautiful, creamy shades of blond for all I was intrigued. Ivory Noir Salon understands and treats blonde more than just a hair color. It takes an expert in color correction and a complete and  total approach to blonde in order to achieve beautiful blondes and maintain it from month to month. And of course, a color correction expert will only use the best products to achieve the amazing results they’re known for. Enter BLONDEME. The very first lightener able to lift 9 levels (i.e. make you very blonde) without damaging and drying hair that’s only available at select hair salons. modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy! modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy! I don’t know the exact science behind the BLONDEME system, but these products coupled with color correction talent at Ivory Noir Salon gave me the prettiest blonde this brunette has ever had.  By the time I was in Andrea’s chair my “before” hair was a sort of brassy, light reddish brown which was the result of a darker toner over previously highlighted hair with an inch or so of dark brown re-growth. It wasn’t shiny, looked unhealthy and had zero personality to it.

After an amazing hair cut, a super deep moisturizing treatment followed by full head of hilights glossed with a creamy, sandy blonde color, I was left with these beautiful shades of blonde!!

Before // After

modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy!

I wanted to wait several weeks before bringing you the complete “after” to see if my new blonde locks would remain in their original brassy state. I’m happy to say my hair looks just the same as it did on day 1, plus a little bit of re-growth of course. My hair is still extremely shiny, hasn’t gone brassy in the least and looks and feels great. No  breakage or extreme dryness.

But will it go brassy?

Nope. I haven’t had to use any purple shampoo to help brighten my blonde over the past several weeks which is something I’ve always had to use in the past. The difference is definitely in seeing a hair stylist who specializes in color correction. Andrea made sure to add on a gloss to protect the integrity of my new color which is preventing it from becoming brassy. It usually lasts around 4-8 weeks so this is great for those of us who might have some damage and want to go a little longer in between hilights. A gloss is something that I’ve never had before and I’ve noticed a world of difference in how my blonde has kept over the past month. Usually after a couple weeks I’m in need of a toner again but now it’s all sass and no brass!

modern mom beauty series: before + after going blonde as a natural dark brunette | out with the brassy, in with the sassy!

Ivory Noir Salon is the first and only salon in Edmonton to specialize in color correction. Their knowledge when it comes to color correction and hilights is incredible and ensures that you’ll leave the salon with beautiful color every single time. Be sure to check out their facebook page for tons of pics of the amazing colors they’re doing in the salon. Lavender ombre anyone??? I’m tempted!!

Do you ever get “funky” with your hair color?
