First Black School Board Chairman Elected

Irvine Carvery has been elected as the Halifax Regional School Board's chairman, making him the first African-Canadian to hold that position in history.

Kristen Lipscombe at the Chronicle-Herald writes that Irvine was quite humbled to accept the position and pointed out the significance of the appointment given the recent election of Barrack Obama in the United States.  From the article:

"It’s significant in the fact that it’s the first, but I think that’s where it lies — it’s just the first. I feel humbled and I feel very honoured that my fellow board members would choose me to chair the Halifax regional school board."
