Video: Dartmouth Poutinerie has Grand Opening

Owner and Chef Bill Pratt was glowing with Pride as he described to me the menu for his new restaurant Cheese Curds. [http://cheesecurdsburgers.com/] The Gourmet Burger and Poutinerie features locally farmed beef, lamb as well as seafood and vegan items made from locally grown and sold fresh ingredients. In spite of the dreary fog outside, the Grand Opening was a 'Triple Belly Buster' of a success with hungry patrons waiting patiently as they lined up out the door and down the pedway. Local Chef Michael Smith was there to take part in the excitement as Chef Bill did the official ribbon cutting and speech. The atmosphere inside the restaurant was warm with a touch of Uptown class, and the smells coming from the kitchen I can only imagine to be akin to an authentic hole-in-the-wall New Orleans BBQ joint, off the beaten path. Lamenting the fact that I couldn't stay and wait in line, my Belly Buster experience will have to sit tight til suppertime. Looks like Dartmouth cuisine is heading Uptown and this Dartmouth girl is gonna be loosening her belt on more than one occasion, abso-friggin'-lutely!   Lee Cripps

Bus strike looms : Twitter folk to the rescue

Halifax Metro Transit DE60LFRs

Just love a good feel good story. As the HRM bus strike looms, local twitters from both sides of the harbor have been using some good old grassroots elbow grease (well finger grease, ewe) to spread the word to match bus folk and commuters.

For those who are Twitter savvy there are a few hash tags to follow. I highly recommend # DartmouthRide #Halifaxride #strikerideshare and #hfxcarpool

Apparently you can sign up at http://www.HRMSmartTrip.ca to find/create available carpools. But I have not used this service yet.

Want to help out ? post a tweet using those hash tags and see if you can get someone close by a ride. Hell share the gas. Some people are even offering coffee.

Need some help finding a ride? Post a tweet and use one or all of those hash tags. Keep an eye on @thedeeside in the upcoming days and we will be retweeting as many of these requests as we can.

And here is a thought. This is a great way to save on gas and a helluva more efficient than the bus. Maybe we can keep this system in place and maybe scare the hell out of Metro transit.

A guy can dream.

Rumor mill : IKEA returning to Dartmouth?

Stool Samples

Whew! Crazy Monday on the Dside. I've been inundated with texts, tweets all about the white whale of big box stores. The question on everyone's lips is, "Is IKEA coming to Dartmouth Crossing?"

I know, I know. This is a tale as old as time. So many stories and legends about the demise of the IKEA store. A little searching and I was astounded to discover the very first IKEA store in North America was opened in Dartmouth in 1975 but closed due to, "high operational costs and market size".

Now I am not immune to rumors and speculation, hell I've spun a few yarns in my time. (How old am i ? ) But this one still grabs me every time it comes up. The fact that today there is surge of talk about this has me searching, souring the internet looking for clues.

And you know why? Because I want a frikken IKEA. I've done the cross country trek to Montreal and Hamilton. I've packed the car overflowing with Swedish goodies several times. I have a personal pet peeve, no matter where I go in the city it seems every furniture store stocks the same big bean bag puffy furniture. Sure there are cheap knockoff places like JYSK, which leaves me unsatisfied.

A year ago almost to the day a local supplier to IKEA, furniture manufacturer Scanwood Canada Ltd. went bankrupt. It seems that theres something about IKEA and the Maritimes that doesn't mix.

What have any of you heard? Post your comments below.
