1 dead, 1 seriously injured after falling into water off Peggys Cove

Halifax District RCMP responded to an incident where two men were in distress in the water near Peggy’s Cove.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. yesterday evening, Halifax District RCMP responded to a 911 report of two men in distress in the water near Peggy’s Cove. EHS, Fire, the Canadian Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (JRCC), were also dispatched to the scene. RCMP learned that two men had been swept out into the ocean by a wave, and search efforts were undertaken.

At approximately 8:55 p.m., a 26-year-old Ontario man was located near the shore and was rescued by fire. The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.

As the search of the water by the 413 Squadron CH149 Cormorant Helicopter, 413 Squadron CC130 Hercules aircraft, Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Hare Bay, Canadian Coast Guard Ship Earl Grey, Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Angel 6, fire boats and fishing boats, continued, at approximately 9:40 p.m., a 23-year-old Dartmouth man was located in the ocean and was pulled on to the CCGC Hare Bay. The man was airlifted to CFB Shearwater by the Cormorant helicopter, while Search and Rescue Technicians administered first aid. Upon arrival at CFB Shearwater the man was pronounced deceased.

The investigation is being assisted by the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Officer.

The RCMP would like to thank Halifax Fire, the Canadian Coast Guard, the JRCC, EHS, and local fishermen who assisted with the search.
