10,000 free tree seedlings up for grabs: Here’s how to get one

Release:

Forest Nova Scotia has launched its third annual Our Trees campaign, with the goal of giving away 10,000 free tree seedlings across the province.

The campaign partners with communities and elementary schools to raise awareness of sustainable forestry practices while encouraging families to plant and care for trees together.

“Nova Scotia’s forestry sector is focused on the long-term sustainability of our forests. The Our Trees campaign is a way for Nova Scotians to join us in these efforts while creating memories with their family planting and nurturing the growth of the seedling,” said Todd Burgess, Executive Director of Forest Nova Scotia.

Since the program began in 2023, more than 36,000 seedlings have been distributed. Organizers note that trees help clean the air, absorb carbon, and reduce flooding risks.

Seedlings can be reserved at OurTrees.ca. Distribution begins mid-September at farmers’ markets and community events across the province, with the following confirmed dates:

  • Halifax (Fairview/Clayton Park): September 18
  • Truro Stampede: September 19
  • Truro Farmers’ Market: September 20
  • Antigonish Farmers’ Market: September 20
  • Sydney Farmers’ Market (Cape Breton): September 27
  • Woodlot Owner of the Year: October 4
  • Wolfville Farmers’ Market: October 18

The campaign coincides with the launch of a new season of Forestry Uncut, Forest Nova Scotia’s podcast hosted by Burgess. Weekly news updates and bi-weekly interviews will spotlight the people and issues shaping the sector.
