Sunday, Feb. 15, will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada.
In recognition, Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant will host a number of public events for Nova Scotians to learn about the origins and significance of Canada’s national flag.
“During this 50th anniversary year, I encourage all Nova Scotians to join in the flag celebrations and to reflect upon our shared citizenship as embodied by our national flag,” said Lt.-Gov. Grant.
A ceremonial flag-raising will take place Friday, Feb. 13, at 8:30 a.m., at Government House to begin a year of celebrations. Guests can view an exhibit about the history of the flag, including one of the first Canadian flags produced and flown.
Other public events at Government House, 1451 Barrington St., Halifax, commemorating the flag include:
— citizenship ceremony, Wednesday, Feb. 18, 10-11:30 a.m.
— presentation by Bruce Patterson, Deputy Chief Herald of Canada, The National Flag of Canada Fifty Years On, Tuesday, March 24, 7-8:30 p.m.
— garden party, Wednesday, June 17, 2-5 p.m.
— guided tours of Government House, featuring flag exhibit, July and August
