The Cowie Hill Connector has been re-named Peter Saulnier Drive to distinguish it from the Cowie Hill Road, which was extended further to connect to Northwest Arm Drive in a new subdivision. On September 20 at 1p.m. there will be a ceremony at the corner of Cowie Hill and Peter Saulnier Drive to recognize the name change. Afterward there will be refreshments at the Captain Spry library. From a release from Starr B, here is some more about Peter Saulnier.
“Mr. Saulnier passed away in Spryfield in 2008 at the age of 61. He was a devoted Santa’s helper who portrayed Santa in the Spryfield Santa Claus Parade and the Spryfield Mall for 29 years. Mr Saulnier had collected many artifacts and photographs pertaining to the history of Spryfield and surrounding communities. In 1990 he was founded the Mainland South Heritage Society and was their local historian and genealogist. Local teachers called upon Peter to talk to their classes about the history of their communities. He constructed many miniature replicas of the local historical buildings of Spryfield which are on display at the Captain William Spry Library. As well, he was an active member of the Maritime Civic War Living History Association and the Urban Farm Museum Society of Spryfield. Mr Saulnier’s accomplishments did not go unnoticed. He received a Public Service Award and HRM’s Volunteer of the Year Award.”
