Health, Safety & Prosperity: Nova Scotia’s 21st-Century Challenge, a novaknowledge Report Card, sets a goal to make Nova Scotia’s workforce and our workplaces the healthiest and safest in the country.
At the same time, we acknowledge much is already underway in an effort to reverse this trend. As a society we are on the cusp of change and the report card conveys the need for a greater sense of urgency and a coordinated approach.
The report card answers two questions:
-What would be the economic impact of improving the overall health of Nova Scotia’s workforce, the safety record of our workplaces, and the time it takes for safe and early return to work following an injury; and
-What can Nova Scotia employers, unions, governments, communities, educators and individuals do to achieve and sustain the improvements necessary to affect the economic impact?
We found the economic impact of our poor health practices and casual safety behaviours is high, and setting out a to-do list for stakeholders, based on the premise that every Nova Scotian has a role in reducing the drain on our economy.
