Regional Crown Attorney Appointed

Veteran prosecutor Susan MacKay has been appointed regional Crown attorney, administrative, to help manage the Halifax Region of the Public Prosecution Service.She will report to Paul Carver, chief Crown attorney for the Halifax region. “I am very pleased that a Crown attorney with Ms. MacKay’s extensive prosecutorial experience is joining our management team,” said Martin Herschorn, director of public prosecutions.A native of Sydney, Ms. MacKay holds degrees in music and law from Dalhousie University. She has been practicing as a Crown attorney for 23 years. Ms. MacKay articled with Burchell MacDougall in Truro. After two years in private practice, she was appointed a Crown attorney and worked primarily in Truro, New Glasgow and Shubenacadie. She transferred to the Halifax office in 1996.Over the years Ms. MacKay has prosecuted hundreds of criminal matters with an extensive focus on sexual assault cases. In 2015 she was one of four Halifax region Crown attorneys appointed to the region’s senior litigation team focusing on major case prosecutions including homicides, sexual assaults and other complex or sensitive cases. Ms. MacKay is a member of the Provincial Court Liaison Committee of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and a past member of the Canadian Bar Association's National Council and Nova Scotia Council. In her capacity as a Crown attorney Ms. MacKay has served on both internal and interdepartmental professional committees, many of which focused specifically on the issues of sexual assault and intimate partner violence. Ms. MacKay has made presentations on criminal legal issues to a wide variety of audiences.
