Nova Scotia Works Supports Job Seekers and Employers

Since September 2016 more than 22,000 Nova Scotians have received employment services at one of the 49 Nova Scotia Works centres across the province.This is the 18-month anniversary of the province’s revamped employment services system, Nova Scotia Works, formed to better meet the needs of job seekers and employers."This type of service is essential to have as part of our economy," said Chuck Porter, Hants West MLA, on behalf of Labour and Advanced Education Minister Labi Kousoulis. “Nova Scotians now have better access to advisors who can help them connect to training, employment programs and jobs, and employers can get help finding the talent they need to grow and succeed."Part of Nova Scotia Works success is a result of the rigorous training and certification process each career practitioner must complete. The Nova Scotia Career Development Association has partnered with the province to deliver the certification program which plays a key role in ensuring consistent employment services across the province. As of today, Jan. 16, more than 150 Nova Scotia Works employees have completed the career development certification process.Pam Garland is one of these certified practitioners. She introduced Nova Scotia Works client Carol Dexter to the Self Employment Benefit program and helped her through the process. Now, Carol operates Carol’s Home Services in Windsor.“After 30 years of being a home care provider, I was laid off and visited Nova Scotia Works in Windsor for help,” said Ms. Dexter. “Because I have a disability it was difficult to find traditional employment, but since finishing the program, I am very busy and happy working for myself.” Nova Scotia Works advisors also work with employers.“I really value the services available at Nova Scotia Works,” said Jeff Redden, owner of Windsor Home Hardware. “The staff are accessible, friendly and, best of all, helpful.
