A member of Halifax District RCMP who was on patrol, running RADAR on August 19 has charged an aggressive driver for several offences related to an incident that occurred shortly after 3 p.m. that day.

The incident occurred on Hwy. 7 when a Nissan Altima and another vehicle were noted to be travelling West, side-by-side, at 126 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone. The police officer turned on his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicles.

The driver of one vehicle pulled over, while the driver of the car appeared to make several attempts to avoid being stopped by the police.

At one point he pulled into a busy parking lot, and even after making eye contact with the police officer, drove away at a high rate of speed. He continued on at a high rate of speed, failing to stop for the police officer with the lights and sirens activated on the police vehicle. RCMP members obtained the licence plate number of the vehicle and had another police officer who was close to the address of the registered owner, attend that location.

The driver was located and arrested without incident, and his vehicle was seized.

An 18-year-old man from Cole Harbour is facing charges of Stunting, Driving Without Insurance, Failing to Produce a Valid Driver’s Licence, Driving Without a Valid Motor Vehicle Inspection, and Operating a Motor Vehicle without a Valid Registration, all under the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.

He is also facing charges under the Criminal Code which include Flight From Police and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He is scheduled to appear on October 3 in Dartmouth Provincial Court.

The investigation is ongoing.
