Halifax Regional Police (HRP) and Halifax District RCMP release a monthly vehicle/pedestrian collision report to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue.
A total of 126 vehicle/pedestrian/bicycle collisions have been reported from January to July 2018. Of the collisions, 27 involved a bicycle. The remaining 99 incidents were vehicle/pedestrian collisions, with 106 pedestrian victims. This represents an increase of 3 (3.03%) vehicle/pedestrian collisions over the same time period in 2017.
Eleven vehicle/pedestrian collisions were reported in July. Month over month, this represents an increase of three incidents from the eight incidents reported in May 2018. Year over year, there was no change of 11 incidents from the 11 incidents reported in July 2017.
For January 1- July 31, 2018, 62.62% (62 incidents) of vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred in crosswalks as compared with 70.43 per cent (81 incidents) reported during this period in 2017.
Of the 106 pedestrians involved in reported collisions in 2018:
- 2 were fatally injured
- 3 experienced severe injuries
- 8 experienced moderate injuries
- 58 experienced minor injuries
- 23 experienced no injuries
- 12 did not report their injuries to police
