(RECALL). Great Pretenders® Best Friends Necklace Set: lead and cadmium

This recall involves a long pink, silver and magenta beaded necklace that is 7.5 inches (approximately 19 centimetres) in length. The beaded necklace set features matching pendants that come together to create a pink flower with the words “Best Friends”. Item number 86007, Lot number 4795, UPC 771877860072 and date code 11/01/18 can be found on the back packaging of the necklace set.
Hazard identified: Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program has determined that the recalled jewellery contains lead and cadmium in excess of allowable limits. Under the Children’s Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead and 130 mg/kg of cadmium. Lead is highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea and other effects on the heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths. As of April 30, 2019, Creative Education of Canada, Inc. has received no reports of incidents in Canada and no reports of injuries. Consumers should immediately take the recalled jewellery away from children, cut the cord of the necklace, and dispose of the products.
