What’s open and what’s closed over the Victoria Day long weekend 2020

Victoria Day is not a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia, so grocery stores and NSLCs will be open during their regular business hours, but closed Sunday. Banks are closed.

Most other retailers that have either closed or adjusted their hours because of COVID-19 will remain unchanged. Be sure to call ahead, however.

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours:

No municipal solid waste collection services will take place on Victoria Day, Monday, May 18. Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday, May 18, will occur instead this Saturday, May 16. Residents are reminded that collection services can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick-up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, Materials Recycling Facility, and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday, May 18, but will be open for regular operating hours on Saturday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 19.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake remains closed until further notice.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services:

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Victoria Day, Monday, May 18. Under current service reductions there will be no ferry service on Victoria Day. For detailed holiday bus schedules visit https://www.halifax.ca/transportation/halifax-transit/routes-schedules/holiday-schedules.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services:

In light of the decision by the Province of Nova Scotia to reopen all provincial and municipal parks, the municipality is in the process of reopening of all parks, trails, greenspaces, community gardens and cemeteries. All beaches, artificial turf fields and playgrounds remain closed until further notice. Tennis and pickleball courts have re-opened for single play only, no doubles. Basketball courts remain closed due to public health restrictions.

Provincial public health measures must be followed on all municipal properties. Residents are reminded that police are still authorized to issue tickets for violations under the Emergency Management Act and Health Protection Act. Parks are open for walking and exercise only. Organized sports and gatherings in violation of public health restrictions are not permitted.

Parking

In an effort to support businesses, select parking has been designated for temporary 15 minute loading zones and are signed accordingly. All short term loading will be enforced to facilitate the effective movement of goods and services as businesses look to re-open and adjust their service levels. On-street parking remains free, however motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage.

Have a safe and enjoyable Victoria Day weekend.
