On October 30, 2020 at approximately 12:16 p.m. in the afternoon New Glasgow Regional Police attended a Hillcrest Avenue apartment complex on a report of a banging sound.
Upon further investigation, a lone adult male armed with a firearm barricaded himself in his apartment.
Police and the New Glasgow Fire Department closed nearby streets to vehicles and pedestrians for several hours during the incident.
At approximately 9:10 p.m., New Glasgow Regional Police with the assistance of the Pictou County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, New Glasgow Fire Department, Emergency health Services and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Critical Incident Team from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick safely apprehended the adult lone male without further incident.
He was apprehended under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act.
No one was injured in the incident.
The 66-year-old adult male from Pictou County has been charged with:
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Unsafe Storage of a Firearm
The accused is currently held in police custody.
NGR Police issued a Nova Scotia Provincial Alert for Pictou County as a safety precaution to hold and secure in the nearby residences in the Hillcrest Avenue area. The Provincial Alert was lifted at approximately 9:35 p.m., as police deemed the immediate area to be safe and secure.
The nearby New Glasgow Academy and Pictou County YMCA Daycare was placed in a Hold and Secure as a safety precaution and was later lifted.
New Glasgow Regional Police Major Crime Unit continue to investigate.
