Halifax Regional Police are providing an update in relation to the death of a man that occurred on January 4 in Halifax.
At approximately 8:20 p.m., police responded to a report of a man who had been shot inside a residence in the 400 block of Herring Cove Road. Officers located a man with a gunshot wound deceased at the residence.
Through the investigation it has been determined that at least three individuals, at least one of whom had a firearm, committed a home invasion at the residence. An altercation occurred with the occupants of the home resulting in the death of one of the individuals invading the home. The other home invasion suspects, who were dressed in dark clothing, fled the area in a vehicle. Investigators have determined this was not a random incident.
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death to be a homicide. The deceased is a 33-year-old man. Out of respect for his family’s wishes we are not releasing the deceased’s name at this time.
Officers arrested four people at the scene. Three of the four were later released without charges.
A 21-year-old man, one of the four people who were arrested at the scene, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges of:
- Carrying a concealed weapon
- Illegal possession of a firearm
- Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public
Criminal charges are not being considered at this time in relation to the death.
Members from the Special Investigations Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division are continuing to look for the other suspects who committed the home invasion.
