Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson confirmed during a press conference this afternoon that three staff members at the QEII emergency department were injured by a patient earlier in the day. No information on the extent of their injuries has been released.

Minister Thompson says that Halifax Regional Police responded to the incident at approximately 1:00 PM and have since taken a suspect into custody.

The incident triggered a Code Silver, a hospital emergency protocol activated when an individual is armed or poses a violent threat. The emergency department was locked down, and only critical emergencies and trauma cases were accepted. Other healthcare facilities in the Halifax Regional Municipality assisted by diverting patients as necessary.
