New marine petting zoo to open at Public Gardens

In a bold move to celebrate local culture and “bring kids closer to our crustacean cousins,” the Halifax Public Gardens announced the launch of a seasonal lobster petting zoo, set to open this spring.

The interactive exhibit will feature a dozen live lobsters in shallow observation tanks surrounded by picnic benches, interpretive signs, and a strict “no boiling” policy.

“We really wanted to showcase something that’s both educational and deeply Nova Scotian,” said Parks spokesperson Marnie Clawsworthy. “And let’s face it — petting goats is so Ontario.”

Children will be allowed to gently pet the lobsters under supervision, using what staff are calling the two-finger side-tickle technique. Gloves will be provided, along with signed liability waivers and a fresh handwashing station that smells vaguely like wharves.

Local seafood fans are already divided. Some see it as a brilliant way to teach kids about marine life and respect for ocean ecosystems. Others just want to know if butter sauce will be served.

“This is a beautiful idea,” said longtime visitor Ned Boudreau. “But I’m telling you right now, if one of them escapes, I will chase it with a roll and a lemon wedge.”

The Gardens insist the lobsters are off-limits for dinner and will be rotated out weekly for “spa time” in Mahone Bay.

When asked if the zoo would ever include crabs, staff replied, “We tried, but they kept fighting about everything.”

The exhibit opens in early May.

April Fools. 🙂
