Police say Halifax driver hit 160 km/h in wild chase

On September 7 at approximately 12:40 a.m., officers attempted to stop a driver who was driving a vehicle with a stolen license plate in the 500 block of Cowie Hill Road in Halifax. The driver initially stopped for police. When a second patrol vehicle arrived to assist, the driver reversed and fled at a high rate of speed and in a dangerous manner.

At approximately 2:20 a.m., RCMP members located the vehicle travelling on Prospect Road and attempted to make a stop, but the driver continued to drive at a high rate of speed.

Officers continued to follow the vehicle from a safe distance to St. Margaret’s Bay Road and onto Highway 102 outbound where it was observed travelling at speeds upward of 160km/hr and with no lights on. A tire deflation was deployed. The driver continued to flee. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop and the driver was arrested.

Ahmed Ibrahim Altawil, 47, was scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of:

  • Flight from peace officer (x2)
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance (x2)
  • Possession of stolen property under $5000
