Dramatic new photos and video from inside Long Lake wildfire battle released

(With files from Provincial release)

The province has released new photos and video from inside the Long Lake wildfire battle, showing the dangerous conditions firefighters continue to face in Annapolis County.

The images, taken September 8, capture fire crews working on smouldering tree roots, navigating unstable terrain, and coordinating helicopter water drops over the burn area near Paradise Lake. Officials say the visuals highlight how fire can burn underground, weakening roots and creating fall hazards even after flames appear to be out.

The Long Lake wildfire complex was declared “held” on September 8, meaning it is not expected to spread under current conditions, but it remains not fully under control. A day later, residents from 22 addresses in the evacuation zone were allowed to return home through a checkpoint on Morse Road.

The fire has already destroyed at least 20 homes since it began in late August. Provincial programs remain in place for those affected, including financial support and mental health resources.

Emergency officials caution that crews will remain on the ground for weeks to monitor flare-ups and ensure hot spots are fully contained.
