RCMP release:
Police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have charged a doctor with additional offences related to an ongoing investigation of sexual assaults at hospitals.
In August 2025, Cumberland County District RCMP charged Sanjeev Sirpal, a doctor formerly employed at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, with sexual assault. Investigators learned that the assault took place in January 2025 during an assessment at a hospital emergency room and believed there may be additional victims. Original news release available here.
Following other reports from the public and further investigation, Sirpal attended Edmundston Police Force headquarters and was safely arrested on November 4. He now faces five additional charges of Sexual Assault. These new charges are also associated to his employment as a doctor in hospital emergency rooms and are under investigation by Cumberland County District RCMP, Sackville, NB, RCMP Detachment, and Edmundston, NB, Police Force.
Sirpal was released on conditions pending court dates on November 17 at Amherst Provincial Court and February 27 at Moncton Provincial Court.
Police continue to believe that there may be additional victims in Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick where Sirpal has practiced.
“Investigators appreciate the courage that it takes for someone to come forward and share their experience,” says Cst. Heather Lourie, Cumberland County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit. “Victims can contact police and discuss an incident before making a decision to participate in the investigation and court process.”
Investigators are reaching out to offer support and encourage anyone who may be a survivor to come forward by contacting your local police. RCMP and Edmundston Police employ a trauma-informed approach in the response for sexual assault investigations.
