Man escapes custody twice in single afternoon, swims river, now faces four charges

RCMP release:

RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment has charged a Sheet Harbour man after he resisted arrest and escaped police custody.

On January 29, at approximately 3:15 p.m., RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment (HRD) officers attended a home in Sheet Harbour to arrest a man for breaching a release order.  He exited the residence through a window and fled on foot.

Officers ran after him until he entered the East River.  He later came out of the river and was arrested.

The man was transported by EHS to the hospital in Musquodoboit Harbour. After being released from the hospital into police custody, the man fled into a wooded area.

With assistance of the Halifax Regional Police Canine Unit, the HRD Street Crime Enforcement Unit, the HRD Community Action Response Team, and a remotely piloted aircraft system, the man was located and taken safely into custody.

Benjamin Bryan William Lowe, 23, of Sheet Harbour, is charged with:

  • Fail to Comply with Release Order (two counts)
  • Resist Arrest
  • Escape from Lawful Custody.

Lowe appeared in Dartmouth Provincial Court on January 30 and remains in custody pending future court appearances.
