RCMP conducts inspections at five illegal cannabis storefronts

The Nova Scotia RCMP has issued six summary offence tickets (SOTs) following inspections at five illegal cannabis storefronts last week.

On March 3, under the authority of the provincial Cannabis Control Act, RCMP officers conducted inspections at illegal cannabis storefronts in the following areas:

  • the 5300 block of Mountain Rd. in Eskasoni
  • the 12100 block of Hwy. 4 in Potlotek
  • the 1-100 block of Petow Loop in Paq’tnkek
  • the 9000 block of Hwy. 105 in Waycobah
  • the 3500 block of Hwy. 303 in Conway

During the inspections, officers seized quantities of cannabis, hash, shatter, and various tobacco and nicotine products. Investigators are continuing to inventory the large amount of seized items.

Some of the cannabis seized was packaged to resemble everyday consumer products such as candy. This style of packaging isn’t legal and increases the risk that children could accidentally consume the cannabis.

Six people present at the storefronts were charged under the Cannabis Control Act for operating a store that sells cannabis; the amounts of the SOTs will be determined in court. Three individuals were also issued appearance notices for offences under the Nova Scotia Revenue Act involving illegal tobacco.

The investigations, which were assisted by the Department of Service Nova Scotia’s Alcohol, Gaming, Fuel and Tobacco Division, remain ongoing.

On March 5, RCMP officers attended a storefront in the 3100 block of Hwy. 12 in Weltons Landing. Upon entry, officers found that it had ceased operations; no illegal product was located.

The Nova Scotia RCMP continues to enforce cannabis laws with a focus on public safety and the aim to have illegal cannabis storefronts cease operations; their products are often sourced from organized crime groups, are unregulated, and may pose health risks.

Anyone with information about illegal drug activity in their community is encouraged to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers.
