Monday is Natal Day, HRM’s 129th trip around the sun, and while it’s not a statutory holiday or a designated retail closing day, enough of the municipality slows down that it’s worth a cheat sheet before you head out the door.

Halifax Busker Festival runs July 29 to Aug. 3, 2026, marking its 40th year, with stages at the Halifax Seaport, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Sackville Landing and Foundation Wharf, plus Alderney Landing on the Dartmouth side.

Road closures Monday

The road race runs 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., starting and ending at 50 Ochterloney Street. Expect delays on Ochterloney, Crichton Avenue, Hawthorne Street, Portland Street, Pleasant Street, Prince Albert Road, Irishtown Road, Queen Street and Alderney Drive.

The parade runs 10:30 a.m. to noon, starting on Windmill Road at Jamieson Street and ending at Silvers Hill Park. It’ll move through downtown Dartmouth on Windmill Road, Ochterloney Street and Prince Albert Road. Give yourself extra time or find another way around.

MacDonald Bridge Closures:

Release: Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) is advising motorists of several upcoming vehicle closures of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in August to accommodate community events and essential bridge maintenance.

Sunday, August 2 – Harbour Hustle and Bridgewalk

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicles only on Sunday, August 2, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to support two popular community events.

Harbour Hustle begins at 10:00 a.m. and features a series of all-ages foot races across the bridge. Registration is sold out, raising more than $2500 for The North Grove, a Dartmouth-based family services centre. 

Later in the day, Bridgewalk takes place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., offering a free family-friendly afternoon on the bridge with live entertainment, interactive displays and activities for all ages. Visitors can enjoy performances by the John Alphonse Band, Euphonic Blend, and Kaizen Pro Wrestling, explore more than 35 community organization booths, check out fire trucks (new and antique) and HHB equipment, talk all things bridge-related with engineers, create chalk art with Jason Skinner, and enjoy free treats. There will also be a fun selfie photo op for anyone with a camera.

Cyclists should continue to use the bicycle lane throughout the day. 

Overnight Closures – August 10 to September 2

The Macdonald Bridge will also be closed overnight to vehicles only from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on the following dates:

• August 10-12 
• August 17-19 
• August 24-26 
• August 31 to September 2 

These twelve overnight closures are required to safely complete the replacement of the remaining Lane Control Sign gantries and associated infrastructure, a project that began in June, while advancing other critical bridge maintenance activities.

The bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists during each overnight closure.

Motorists are encouraged to use the A. Murray MacKay Bridge or other alternate routes and allow extra travel time during all scheduled closures.

Fireworks and fire safety

If you’re setting off your own fireworks, check beforeyouburn.halifax.ca first. A burn ban in effect means no fireworks, full stop. Give your neighbours a heads up, and stick to the manufacturer’s instructions. The municipality would rather you just enjoy one of the public displays, which come with trained operators and none of the backyard risk.

Grocery, retail and NSLC

Natal Day isn’t a designated retail closing day, so most stores stay open, just on shorter hours. In past years:

• Sobeys, Atlantic Superstore and Walmart: open noon to 6 p.m.
• NSLC: most HRM locations noon to 6 p.m., Hubbards typically longer
• Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, Sunnyside Mall, Dartmouth Crossing: noon to 5 p.m.
• Pharmacies: hours vary by location, some reduced or closed

Worth a quick call ahead if you’re planning around a specific stop.

Halifax Water

Halifax Water offices will be closed to the public Monday, reopening with regular hours Tuesday, Aug. 4. A smaller crew of core staff stays on to handle anything urgent, and the Customer Care Centre’s emergency line runs 24/7 at 902-420-9287 for water, wastewater or stormwater issues. If you see Halifax Water crews working in your area, give them room.

Garbage, recycling and organics

No curbside collection Monday. If your pickup normally lands that day, it moves to Saturday, Aug. 1, before 7 a.m. Otter Lake and the Materials Recovery Facility are closed Monday but open regular hours Saturday.

The Household Special Waste Depot in Bayers Lake is closed Saturday, Aug. 1, reopening Saturday, Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A mobile depot runs Saturday, Aug. 1 at Musquodoboit Valley Education Centre, also 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Halifax Transit

Buses run a holiday schedule Monday. Both ferries run every 30 minutes: Alderney’s first trip leaves the terminal at 7:30 a.m., last one leaves Halifax at 11:45 p.m. Woodside’s first trip leaves at 7:37 a.m., last one leaves Halifax at 8:52 p.m.

Libraries

All Halifax Public Libraries branches are closed Monday, confirmed system-wide.

Recreation

Municipal beaches, the Halifax Common Pool, and the Bedford and Cole Harbour outdoor pools are open, with free open swim at Bedford and Cole Harbour on Natal Day itself. Splash pads at Bayers-Westwood, George Dixon, Isleville Street, Cole Harbour, Shirley’s, Westmount, Sackville and BLT are open too.

The Emera Oval is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with equipment lending weather permitting. Sackville Sports Stadium runs reduced services, so call ahead. Most other municipal rec centres are closed.

Everything else

• 311 is closed to non-urgent requests, but urgent calls still go through. Regular service resumes Tuesday.
• In-person Customer Service Centres are closed Monday, reopening Tuesday.
• Paid on-street parking is free Monday. Standard rules on sidewalks and intersections still apply.
