Release:
HRM By-Law Services attended an address on East Chezzetcook Road today
to prevent further access to a home that is subject to an Order to
Vacate and Secure Unsafe Property. The Order dates back to November 19,
2010 and stipulates that the home is not structurally sound,
inadequately supported and not habitable.
HRM By-Law Services received a public complaint on February 11 that the
house was believed to be inhabited in breach of the Order. A By-Law
Officer attended the property to investigate along with the RCMP, and
determined the female owner was inside. She agreed to leave voluntarily
at the time.
HRM By-Law Services attended the property at 10 a.m. today to secure
the home from further access based on last week’s incident. Upon
arrival, they determined the owner was again back inside the home and
called RCMP for assistance. While the woman initially refused to exit
the home, she eventually did so voluntarily. HRM By-Law Services
remained on-site throughout the morning to work with contractors to
board up the home to prevent further access given the structure is
deemed unsafe.
Breaching an Order to Vacate and Secure Unsafe Property carries a fine
of $100-10,000 under the Halifax Charter Part XV Dangerous or Unsightly
Premises.
