Deadline for RCMP’s Proposed Alarm Response Strategy

The Nova Scotia RCMP want to remind citizens that March 15 is the deadline to give feedback responding to the proposed Alarm Response Strategy.

The RCMP are currently in the consultation phase of developing a provincial strategy in an effort to decrease the number false alarm calls, allowing for more focus on crime reduction and prevention.

Under the new proposal, police would require single zone alarms be verified by the alarm company or eye witness to confirm that an unwanted intrusion has occurred. The RCMP will still be dispatched to multi-zone alarms, such as glass breaks, hold-up alarms, panic alarms and medical alarms etc.

In 2009 and 2010, the RCMP spent more than 12, 000 hours responding to false alarms. Reducing false alarm calls will ensure that more time and focus are centralized on enhancing public safety and enforcement of crime across Nova Scotia.

The RCMP request home and business owners to submit feedback and opinions on the proposed alarm strategy by March 15, via an online form located at www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca. An FAQ is also posted on the site to answer common questions.
