Investigators with the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit have laid charges against a man in connection with a case where counterfeit money has been passed.

Over the last two weeks, police have received 12 reports of counterfeit American twenty dollar bills being passed in various businesses in HRM. In every case, the bills have the serial number JL84864491B and the ink on the paper will run if it gets wet.

In one of theses cases, a man entered a business in Dartmouth Crossing on August 8 and passed three counterfeit bills in three separate transactions. As a result of the investigation, 49-year-old Stephen Ambrose MacNeil of Dartmouth was arrested yesterday and faces three counts of uttering forged documents. He is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court this afternoon. MacNeil is the second person charged in these cases. A 44-year-old Dartmouth woman was charged in two of the other cases earlier this month and investigators are continuing to investigate the remaining incidents.
