Business leader Sean Sears has been appointed Honorary Consul General of the Republic of the Philippines in Nova Scotia.
“Honorary Consuls play an important role in supporting strong partnerships between Nova Scotia and the province’s international partners,” said Premier Darrell Dexter.
“Mr. Sears brings a diverse range of experience and expertise to the position, which will support our relationship with the Philippine community in Nova Scotia and abroad.”
Members of the Consular Corps represent their countries’ interests in Nova Scotia while promoting mutually beneficial relationships between their countries and the province.
Nova Scotia shares many similar interests with the Philippines, including a seafaring history, marine-influenced economy, and water and coastal management. In 2012, a delegation from the Philippines visited Nova Scotia to learn more about the province’s approach to water resource management.
“We are pleased to announce the Philippine’s first Honorary Consul General Office in Nova Scotia and Sean Sears’ appointment,” said Leslie Gatan, Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to Canada. “The Philippine government recognizes Nova Scotia as Canada’s Atlantic gateway to the global economy and home to a growing Philippine–Canadian population.
“Mr. Sears will facilitate engagement between the Philippines and Nova Scotia, furthering social, cultural and economic linkages.”
Mr. Sears is chair of the Ogden Pond Group of Companies, which provides advisory services and management expertise to new ventures. In this role, he serves as chair of several organizations, including Export Nova Scotia, cider producer ShipBuilders Cider, Petite Riviere Vineyards, television production company Metamorphia and software developer SageCrowd.
“It is an honour to represent the fine people of the Philippines and their government in my native Nova Scotia,” said Mr. Sears. “The Philippine–Canadian population in Nova Scotia is already making an exceptional contribution and are noted for their work ethics, skills and friendly demeanor.
“For four straight years, the Philippines have been Canada’s top source of new immigrants. Our two regions share a similar marine-influenced economy and character, as the Philippines is comprised of over 7,000 islands. There are many mutual economic trade and investment links to explore and I am humbled with the appointment and excited to help out.”
An Honorary Consular Officer is a voluntary position. The appointment is for three years and is renewable. There are 31 members in the Consular Corps of Nova Scotia.
