Young Nova Scotians bettering themselves and making a difference in their communities are being celebrated in activities and events across the province this week.

Education and Early Childhood Development deputy minister Carole Olsen joined members of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards provincial council today, Oct.

21, for a flag-raising ceremony at Province House to mark the start Duke Awareness Week in Nova Scotia.

“Young Nova Scotians are volunteering and working tirelessly in their communities,” said Ms. Olsen. “The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program recognizes young people who give selflessly, and help make this province an even better place to live.”

Throughout the week, young people, duke participants, leaders, council members, parents and volunteers will participate in theme days that highlight the great work youth are doing in their communities.

More than 2,300 young Nova Scotians, age 14 to 25, participate in Duke of Edinburgh programs each year to promote community and national development, while learning the life skills that lead to personal growth and achievement.
