Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – Please be advised that the overnight winter parking ban will be enforced overnight, from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, while municipal operations works to clear the streets and sidewalks of the snow and ice from today’s storm.

Vehicles must be off HRM streets during these hours to accommodate effective clearing operations. Residents should also be aware that under section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.

The overnight winter parking ban is in effect from now until March 31, 2014, however, it will only be enforced during declared snow and ice events, such as today’s storm.

The easiest way to be prepared is to sign up for CityWatch notifications of parking bans. Fill out a registration form at www.halifax.ca/snow/parkingban, email contacthrm@halifax.ca or call 311. Subscribers will receive timely alerts by phone, email, and/or text message when the ban is in effect and again when it is lifted. Residents who received these notifications last winter will continue to receive the service this year. Standard text messaging rates apply.

Snow has already begun falling in some areas of HRM and is expected to continue throughout the day. Forecasts are calling for an accumulation of up to 30 centimetres in some areas.

Municipal crews and contracted services were busy Friday and Saturday with anti-icing measures to help reduce the buildup of snow and ice on the streets. Clearing crews will continue working overnight and into Monday, until all the streets and sidewalks are clear.
