This Is How We Booze It: NSLC Announces Top Nova Scotia Products for 2013

HALIFAX, December 30, 2013 – The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation (NSLC) announced today a list of top-selling Nova Scotia products along with the launch of its 2012-13 integrated annual report. As part of its mandate, the NSLC adopts practices and policies that support a wide range of locally- produced products. The result was a banner year for Nova Scotia products, fueled in part by the success of Nova Scotia wines, which have doubled in sales over the past five years, growing from $4.4 million in 2008 to $9.4 million in 2013.

“Although Nova Scotians are generally buying less alcohol year over year, we’re seeing a consistent trend toward the purchase of more local and premium products,” said Bret Mitchell, CEO, NSLC. “That mix has been good news for the local industry, which now contributes upwards of $760 million in economic impact province-wide.”
In all, the volume of alcohol sold in the province has declined by more than 3.5% since 2010. However, the province has enjoyed a continued surge in the popularity of local products. Highlights for the year include:

Nova Scotia Wines
  • Local wines contributed $9,383,749 to NSLC revenues
  • Top sellers (750 ml) were Nova 7, Jost Marble Mountain and Lunenburg County Blueberry
  • Over 74,000 cases were sold, accounting for 7% of total wine sales
  • 147 different Nova Scotia wine articles were offered from 13 local wineries
  • If Nova Scotia was a wine country of its own, it would rank 5th in overall NSLC sales, outselling Chile, Argentina and France

Nova Scotia Craft Beers
  • Nova Scotian craft beer sales grew by 13%, accounting for $6.8 million in sales
  • One out of every two bottles of craft beer sold is a local product, with Garrison Brewing Company and Propeller Brewery being top performers

Nova Scotia Ciders
  • Cider continues to make its mark on the local landscape, with sales growing by 104%
  • Top sellers were Stutz, Shipbuilders and Bulwark
