Nova Scotians can experience life in a fishing community and at sea when the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg reopens on Saturday, May 17.

The museum was closed for several months of work to re-stabilize the building.

The foundation was old and needed to be replaced with new concrete.

“The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is an essential piece of Lunenburg’s proud maritime heritage, and I’m thrilled that it will open its doors to serve the community again,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. “I wish the Lunenburg Marine Museum Society success as it gets ready for a busy tourist season.”

The majority of the exhibit space will be open as well as the restaurant and gift shop. The In-Shore Fisheries section will be closed while workers put the interior back together. There will be minimal disruption for visitors.

“We’re very happy with the excellent work that Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal staff and their partners have done, and we can’t wait for people to see it,” said Angela Saunders, museum general manager. “The team at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic is excited for the chance to deliver a complete museum experience.”

Over the next few weeks, some of the larger exhibits and boats will be put back into the museum. The museum will have about 6,000 square feet of additional exhibit space when work is completed later in the summer.
