Government is supporting a sustainable transportation project that will enhance cycling culture on the Eastern Shore.

Energy Minister Andrew Younger announced today, Sept. 19, government will provide $40,000 to The Deanery Project in Ship Harbour, Halifax Regional Municipality, to increase community awareness about rural cycling culture and to finish renovating the Bicycle Hub, an on-site classroom.

This investment will leverage other funding, representing about 40 per cent of the project cost.

“Promoting ecologically friendly living is at the heart of The Deanery Project’s mission,” said Energy Minister Andrew Younger. “With our support, The Deanery Project will be able to build on its community programming, and encourage more Eastern Shore residents to use sustainable transportation.”

The Deanery Project will host more on-site sustainable transportation programs and introduce school-based programs. It will also finish renovating the Bicycle Hub and an outdoor bicycle storage space and hire a full-time co-ordinator for community programs.

“The Eastern Shore has breathtaking beauty, ideal for cycling enthusiasts and newcomers alike,” said Kim Thompson, executive director of The Deanery Project. “The sustainable transportation initiatives announced today will inspire residents and visitors to ride for joy and health, building stronger bodies and stronger communities.”

In 2013, government funding helped convert a large storage shed into Rocky’s Roost, the building that houses the Bicycle Hub and a community woodworking shop.
