HFX Fish ‘n’ Chips Quest: Wharf Wraps

Wharf Wraps, located in touristy Fisherman’s Cove, is too upscale to be pub food. Its black tablecloths, square plates and green curtains create a strange vibe that is not fine dining, but not exactly casual.

I would go as far as to say that Wharf Wraps suffers from an identity crisis. I mean, why is it called “Wharf Wraps” anyway? Makes it sound like a quick-order deli counter…. near a wharf.

Some may remember the owner’s bio on a previous menu. Or at least, some guy named “Steele” who is affiliated with the restaurant. You can still find it on the interwebs, so you will be able to see that I’m not exaggerating when I say he looks straight out of Jersey Shore. Apparently the restaurant was started up by the family so that he could pursue his country music career. I’m sure he’s a nice guy.

Anyway…

The fish ‘n ‘chips features line-caught haddock, which we were assured came fresh off the boats. A 1pc is $17 – a bit pricey, even for a pub style fish ‘n’ chips. But the portion is quite large and there generally is a premium for anything “line-caught”.  You don’t need a 2pc fish ‘n’ chips at Wharf Wraps, but if you want one it is $23.

This is what we got:

Despite my wary remarks, Wharf Wraps has hit the jackpot when it comes to a good batter recipe! This was exceptional batter – crispy but with some substance and flavour. It clung onto a very large and moist piece of fish. I was impressed!

The fries were the frozen type that pretends to be hand-cut. When we inquired, we were told that they were “frozen hand-cut fries”, which is really no better than McCain’s and only marginally better than the likes of John’s Lunch.

The coleslaw contained pineapple, which gave it a really interesting and refreshing flavour. I only wish there was more of it.

The tartar sauce was Kraft brand, but at least it was placed in adequately sized containers for dunking. Can’t complain.

I’m not a big fan of the atmosphere in the dining room, which is funny because the first review on Urbanspoon says, “Fish ‘n’ chips with a great atmosphere!” It’s subjective, obviously. Next time I think I’ll check out the patio, because fish ‘n’ chips always tastes better outdoors.

I will say in summary that I think the fish ‘n’ chips here are really special (well, the fish is at least). Wharf Wraps, as a fish ‘n’ chips destination, would benefit from some rebranding but I’d come back for this fish, and to enjoy a sunny day at Fisherman’s Cove.
