A Call for Proposals: Heritage Day Flag Design

Deadline: July 6, 2015

The Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage is seeking proposals from visual and graphic artists to design a flag (banner) for Nova Scotia Heritage Day.

Background

Celebrated the third Monday in February, Nova Scotia Heritage Day is an annual reminder of our storied past and an opportunity to honour the remarkable people, places and events that have contributed to this province’s unique heritage.

The very first Nova Scotia Heritage Day took place on February 16, 2015. In 2014, a number of schools participated in the provincial naming contest for the holiday. The first honoree was Viola Desmond. In 2016 it will be Joseph Howe. A list of future honorees can be found on the Heritage Day website. https://heritageday.novascotia.ca/ .

Heritage Day Flag

The Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage is interested in the creation of a flag (banner) that would be used in Heritage Day celebrations.
We recently asked school-age children and youth to submit their designs and ideas that will inspire a design for a Heritage Day Flag. A selection panel will review submissions and the top designs will receive a prize and recognition.
The top designs will be shared with a professional artist or graphic designer who will use the submissions to inspire the creation and design of the new Heritage Day Flag.

The Call

We are currently seeking proposals from professional visual artists and graphic designers who are interested in creating designs for a Heritage Day Flag.

The successful artist will adhere to the parameters outlined below.

Remuneration is set at $5,000.

After proposals are received, an interview panel will meet with a short list of artists for an interview. Interviews will take place in July/early August, 2015.

Parameters

• Submissions are sought from visual and graphic artists.
• Your proposal should include three (3) samples of previous artwork/designs.
• Flag designs should be conducive to flag convention and not duplicate an existing flag.
• The successful artist must provide three flag (3) designs by September 30, 2015
• Flag designs are to be inspired by the artwork of the top student submissions from the Nova Scotia Heritage Day Flag Contest.
• The artist will relinquish physical and intellectual rights to the three (3) designs.
• The artist will provide a written description of each flag design and how it connects with Nova Scotia’s heritage.
• The artist will meet with the final selection panel to present the flag designs.

To apply please include:
1. a completed application form
2. a resume of artist work and related experience
3. a letter of interest
4. a short biography (100 words)
