African Heritage Month 2015 Launches

Lt.-Gov. J.J. Grant and Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince joined people from communities across the province at Government House today, Jan. 28, to launch African Heritage Month 2015 in Nova Scotia.

This year’s African Heritage Month theme is Justice: People, Places and Events.

“This February we celebrate the significant contributions of African Nova Scotians to the province and we recognize those who have undertaken the important work of advocating for social change,” said Lt.-Gov. Grant. “I encourage all Nova Scotians to enjoy some of the exciting events planned for the month and to take this opportunity to learn from the women and men of African descent who have helped to build more equitable communities for everyone.”

The United Nations declared 2015 as the beginning of the Decade of People of African Descent, embracing the theme of recognition, justice and development.

“We welcome the global conversation about justice, because it is such a significant part of the African Nova Scotian experience,” said Mr. Ince. “We are recognizing those who have inspired us with their courage, and we will honour their achievements throughout African Heritage Month.”

“As we enter our 31st year of African Heritage Month, we can really see the growth of the celebration,” said Crystal Mulder, co-chair of Black History Month Association. “Nova Scotians recognize the importance of celebrating the province’s heritage, and it’s wonderful that we can get together and recognize the contributions that African Nova Scotians have made to this great province.”
