After several years, the Macdonald Bridge Bridgewalk and MACPASS Miles footrace are back this weekend

Halifax Harbour Bridges (HHB) is excited to welcome bridge enthusiasts back to the Macdonald Bridge this weekend for the return of the MACPASS Miles and Bridgewalk events on July 31, 2022.

After being postponed for several years due to the Big Lift and COVID-19, people once again have the opportunity to experience the bridge in these two unique, fun-filled ways.

MACPASS Miles

Run through the centre of the iconic Macdonald Bridge while enjoying the panoramic views from the bridge deck during this one-of-a-kind road race.

MACPASS Miles is open to all runners, at all experience levels and all speeds. Racers start on the Halifax side, running the 1.3-kilometre stretch of the bridge before crossing the finish line just short of the toll booths on the Dartmouth side.

There are four heats, the first of which starts at 9 a.m. The final heat leaves the start line at 10:30 a.m.

Online registration for MACPASS Miles is open until July 29, 2022. Race kit pick-up for registered runners is Saturday, July 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Macdonald Bridge garage located at 125 Wyse Road in Dartmouth.

Bridgewalk

For those who want to take in the breathtaking views from the iconic Halifax landmark without the sweat of the morning run, Bridgewalk is the perfect opportunity.

From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., residents and visitors are invited to wander the Macdonald Bridge span, while taking in family-friendly entertainment and activity stations. The festivities will officially open on the Dartmouth side at 2 p.m. with remarks from incoming HHB CEO Tony Wright and Halifax Mayor Mike Savage.

John Alphonse and the Waterfront Stompers Dixieland Band will be playing and roaming the bridge between Halifax and Dartmouth. The Chebucto Big Band will perform near the toll booths on the Dartmouth side.

While the bands play, visitors can enjoy circus performances from Interstellar Circus Arts, check out the bells and whistles on a working fire truck, get bicycle safety tips from the Halifax Cycling Coalition, learn bridge facts from HHB insiders, and seek out all the photo ops in our Bridgewalk Photo Scavenger Hunt.

The Bridgewalk is a free event open to people of all ages, walks of life and fitness levels. Baby strollers, wheelchairs and dogs are welcome. Cyclists are asked to remain in the bike lane unless walking their bikes.

NOTE: Water and snacks will be provided, however, due to COVID-19 precautions, there will be no BBQ, cake or high-touch activities as in previous years.

Bridge closure information

The Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 for both the MACPASS Miles and Bridgewalk events.

The Macdonald Bridge will also be closed to vehicle traffic from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday, Aug. 1, for the Natal Day Parade. Drivers should plan accordingly.
