During the month of November, RCMP in Nova Scotia will be reminding motorists that aggressive driving – including speeding, tailgating, cutting off other drivers, road raging and stunting – is not just rude, but dangerous, too.
Aggressive drivers put everyone at risk by increasing the likelihood of collisions. Speeding is especially problematic, as it drastically reduces the amount of time drivers have to react to unexpected hazards. Those caught speeding can face a fine up to $2,422.50 and a 7-day license suspension.
In 2015, Nova Scotia RCMP responded to 25 collisions causing serious and fatal injuries where speed was a causal factor. In these collisions, seven people died.
“Driving aggressively can have dire consequences,” says Cst. Mark Skinner of the Nova Scotia RCMP Traffic Services Unit. “If you drive aggressively, you’re making the choice to put yourself and others at risk.”
If you witness dangerous driving, report it to police when it is safe to do so. If you find yourself driving dangerously, take a deep breath and remind yourself that aggressive driving is not just rude, but dangerous, too.
