American Idol: A Rio Good Time

Dear American Idol,

This? This is exactly what you should always be doing. Instead of those brutal dance numbers that make at least half the contestants incredibly uncomfortable, splitting them up to actually showcase their talent? Brilliant. Please keep it up, because although I’ll miss giggling over Casey’s awkward facial expressions and Scotty’s complete lack of vocal presence, this really works.

So, you know, kudos.

xoxo

As much as I can’t stand Scotty, his performance of Carrie Underwood’s song “I Told You So” with Lauren was great. I mean, it was great because Lauren killed it and I tried to plug my ears when Scotty sang. I didn’t love the song choice for “Solid as a Rock”, but Naima and Jacob both sang well.

Break time! Fantasia came out to sing. Look, I love Fantasia. The girl drew a tough hand of cards in life, and she’s crazy talented. I will continue to root for her, even though she wore that unbelievably unflattering dress that made it way too easy to make a joke about the fact that she was singing a song about food. But she’s just so lovably quirky, with her squeaky speaking voice and soulful singing. She’ll always be one of my favorite Idol winners.

I was excited to hear Thia, Haley and Pia sing Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”, because I love that song and have heard a lot of great versions of it. But what gives with everyone but Thia getting a solo? Really? Really? The girl was on her way out, you might as well let her milk every moment of fame she has left!

As for “Band on the Run”? Delightful! Those four guys’ voices don’t necessarily mesh, but they were just so adorable! What a little mismatched group of ragamuffins. And the song choice was great. So fun!

When all was sung and done, the bottom three was Naima, Thia and Paul. Paul! My beloved Paul! Look, I was in a very tough position. I love both Paul and Stefano, and I didn’t want either dude in the bottom three. But I was prepared for Stefano to be in the spot, I didn’t see Paul coming.

Before we could find out the fates of Paul, Thia and Naima, we had to sit through a terrible, terrible performance by Jamie Foxx and will.i.am. I’ve never hated a movie before even seeing the trailer before, but I can honestly say I think Rio sucks. Thanks to this performance. For realsies, the Idol singers put these guys to shame.

Thank god, Paul was safe. I would have been crushed if he’d gone home. But I was sad to see Thia go – I wish she’d done better. She’s a fantastic singer, and I really think there’s a place for her in the music industry. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – she can sing the current teen pop stars under the table. So I hope she does well. I like Naima’s style, but she was out of her league at this point in the competition and I knew she had to go.

What did you think of the results? Predictable? Surprised by Paul? What did you think of the duets and group performances?
