America’s Got Talent: …but they lost it along the way

I didn’t remember as many of the twelve acts that performed on Tuesday night’s episode of America’s Got Talent as I thought I would. I’ve been watching, why don’t I know everyone at this point?
The South Philly Vikings
Boooooring. Sure, it was a bit harsh for Piers to X them. But I could understand where he was coming from – the act had very little going for it. Calling them “overgrown schoolchildren in robot costumes” was also a bit much, but the act definitely didn’t appeal to me.
CJ Dippa
I actually had to fast forward through CJ’s act. Maybe it’s because I hate Eminem. Maybe it’s because I hate most child rappers. He’s a talented enough kid, but I just can’t stand him. In particular, I can’t stand the 12-year-old player persona where they show him pretending to flirt with girls on the phone.
Harmonica Pierre
Harmonica Pierre is adorable. I loved that he played one of my favorite songs, Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” – fantastic idea decided to go with a contemporary song. I enjoyed his performance so much that I’ll actually considering listening instead of plugging my ears and obnoxiously singing to myself next time my boyfriend breaks out his harmonica. Even though he sounds about as much like Pierre as my foot. The question is, though: Could you sit through a whole harmonica concert?
Polina Volcheck
Unfortunately, Polina’s second performance wasn’t nearly as good as her first. The bending at the beginning was weird, and the rest of the act was dull. Again, I thought Piers was a bit harsh, but overall he was correct.
The Strange Familiar
This group was one of my favorites from earlier in the season. I don’t think this second performance was as strong as the first one (surprise!), but it wasn’t as bad as the judges thought. I thought the performance was a bit dull at first, but it picked up. I’d love to see them do something current, like Lady Gaga. Still, they were my favorite act thus far, and I still think they deserve to move on. Piers, who apparently felt he hadn’t been cruel enough yet in the episode, actually told the lead singer she should dump her band – despite the fact that it includes her husband. Real sensitive, Piers.
Haspop
I dislike mimes. I thought everyone disliked mimes, much like everyone dislikes clowns. But maybe not. Luckily, there’s enough dancing mixed into Haspop’s act that I don’t really notice the miming. And Haspop is really good – I think he should be one of the ones to go through.
Luigi
I loved Luigi when we first saw him. He just struck me as such a sweet and genuine guy, and I have to root for him. Luckily, he makes it pretty easy by choosing songs I love and performing the hell out of them. And by wearing fedoras. Yeah, he’s not the best singer I’ve ever heard. But he’s good enough and he’s likable. He was shaky and nervous, but I didn’t think he deserved to be X’ed.
Chipps Cooney
Oh, my. Playing a bad magician is dangerous. To do it correctly, one would have to be really funny. And I thought he might be, based on his intro package. But I was with Piers – I would have buzzed him as soon as I saw the nipple tassels. And apparently Sharon and Howie felt the same way, because Chipps didn’t even get to finish his act.
Kaya and Sadie
These bellydancing girls are certainly hot, but are they an act? I don’t make a habit of watching bellydancing on its on. It usually needs to be accompanied by lots and lots of Middle Eastern food (great, now I’m craving falafel), and enough wine to make sure that one of my friends (not me) gets up and dances. But the girls are very good dancers, and have a good chance of moving on to the next round.
Jeremy
Jeremy upped the excitement level of his performance by doing a bunch of his stunts while blindfolded. It’s not really my kind act, but I know some other people really enjoy that kind of thing. I don’t think I could watch that act for more than half an hour, though – it’s something I would expect to see at the local buskers festival.
Debra Romer
Debra chose a great song for her voice, but I felt that you could still hear the nerves in her voice. She’s a very similar performer to Luigi – very sweet and likable, but doesn’t have the strongest voice and could benefit from some stage experience.
Studio One Young Beast Society
I’ve been disappointed that the dance acts never seem to go through on AGT, so I was rooting for this group – despite their annoyingly long name. Their routine was fantastic, and I’d really like to see them keep going to provide a bit of variety.

Only four acts can continue on – who are you rooting for? I’d like to see Studio One Young Beast Society, Haspop, The Strange Familiar and Luigi. But I’m flexible. This might have been the weakest episode so far, and there wasn’t really a single act that totally blew my mind.
