America’s Next Top Model: Flawed Design

You know what’s super classy? Relishing in the elimination of a girl you didn’t like in a modeling competition. Seriously, ANTM wannabes – you won, Kacey lost, so why keep talking about how much you hated her? It’s time to be the bigger person!
OMG, they actually let Esther do a confessional video this week. And she talked about her home life! Seriously, we have seen so little of this girl since casting, and she could be Ann’s stiffest competition. She talked about how it’s hard to keep kosher in the house – I had to laugh when Chris said she just got a headache thinking about Esther’s dietary restrictions. It does sound pretty complicated, and there are a lot of girls in that house. Props to Esther for not turning her back on her traditions!
Grammy Time
OK, who wants to go visit the Grammy museum with me? It is so cool! They have J.Lo’s dress and MJ’s gloves! And that dude with the beard who speaks every year was there! The girls were there to participate in a challenge, and the winner would be awarded the incredibly cool honor of handing out a Grammy. Well, cool as long as they’re handing it to Beyonce or Gaga, not to the winner of Best Polka Album.
The first part of the challenge was that the girls had to shop for one another. Some girls actually took their partner’s advice, but others (cough cough Kayla) completely disregarded their partner’s preferences. Ann was probably the worst, though – she didn’t even choose the right size for Chelsey. At least she meant well…I expected a couple cat fights to result from this challenge, but the most we got was quiet disappointment. Reasonable people make for poor ANTM contestants, I guess.
Kayla and Liz: I liked the dress that Liz chose for Kayla, but I thought Kayla went way to casual for Liz. She looked as though she was attending a concert at a local dive, not the Grammy Awards. I thought Liz was very convincing in how badly she wanted to attend the Grammies.
Chris and Kendal: I hated Kendal’s dress, I thought it looked cheap. Chris looked hot, but Jay was right – it was a little Stripperella. They weren’t as well spoken as Kayla and Liz, though.
Jane and Esther: These girls looked sexy, but classier than the other girls. Kendal thought they looked like they were going to church or Sunday school – I would LOVE to know what church people attend in strapless cocktail dresses.
Ann and Chelsey: Chelsey’s dress was obviously too large, but Chelsey was too uncomfortable in it. Jay was right, she should have tried to sell it. She was right to be mad, though – she did a great job on Ann’s outfit and Ann’s effort was an utter fail.
So who came across as the best? I didn’t see a clear winner in the pack. The winning team was Kayla and Liz. I would have chosen Liz of the two – she obviously really wanted it. Instead, they gave it to Kayla. Then she reminded us how she used to be homeless and stuff. I should have been touched, but the sob stories get old on this show. Liz was bummed about her loss, so she decided to get plastered. Yep. She drowned her sorrows in booze – what a great role model!
Designing Women
For the photo shoot the model wannabes were portraying famous fashion photographers. And can I just say how adorable photographer and guest judge Francesco Carrozzini was? For real, he’s the new Nigel Barker. Liz was hilarious, because she did a great job of portraying John Galliano even though she’d never heard of him. Chelsey looked stunning as Carolina Herrara, and Chris was adorable as Betsey Johnson. Kendal got a tough one – Vera Wang is pretty subdued – but she was subdued to the point of being boring.  Kayla was good as Vivienne Westwood, but the more outlandish designers were easier to pull off. Jane had a tough task in portraying Marc Jacobs – how do you just stand there and look talented? Ann pulled off the dude vibes portraying Alexander Wang, but Esther struggled to portray Christoph Decarnin. I felt bad for her – she looked like Tom Cruise’s ugly cousin, how was she supposed to pull off a good shoot?
Esther knew she hadn’t done well, but it seemed like a lot of girls struggled with the shoots – especially the ones who were portraying more subdued designers. There were a few lame-o choices in there, and a few missed opportunities. No Donnatella Versace? No Karl Lagerfeld? No Valentino, surrounded by pugs? What the hell?
Designed, Sealed, Delivered
I had to laugh at the behind the scenes moment before judging where Tyra confessed that she totally had the hots for Nigel when she met him. I know some people find Tyra annoying, but whatevs. I think she’s hilarious. If she had her own old school variety show I’d totally watch. Now let’s talk photos.
Kayla: Kayla really delivered. I can’t say I’m a fan of this girl, but it was a really good photo.
Liz: I do not like Liz. She’s whiny and conceited and that’s a bad combination. But that photo was stellar, and she was right about the eyebrow thing.
Chelsey: Chelsey. Looked. Stunning. She really pulled off the elegance of Carolina Herrara. It was a little harsh, but it totally worked. I like Chelsey because of all the girls, I think she looks the most like a model when they attend the judging.
Esther: Poor Esther. She drew the short end of the stick when it came to designers, and her photo sucked. I could only hope it wouldn’t result in her elimination because she’s got potential.
Jane: Jane drew the second shortest stick when it came to designers. She was totally overshadowed by the other model in the shot.
Kendal: Kendal couldn’t manage to pull off Vera Wang without looking boring, and her shot was weak. Possibly the weakest of all the models, because at least she was portraying a girl, and a designer she’d heard of.
Ann: Ann! God! Will she EVER take a bad shot? It’s un-freakin-believable. Best photo? No. Good photo? Yes. Again.
Chris: THIS (right) was the best photo. It was so charming and energetic and spot on. At this point, I think Chris is Ann’s stiffest competition. She’s delivering great photos and has the charm Ann lacks. The problem for me though, is that neither girl looks like a model in person.

So who got best photo? Liz! I liked Chris’s photo better, but Liz was second-best in my book. I never would have predicted that she’d be the one to break Ann’s streak, though. Next Kayla was called, then Ann, Chesley, Chris (why so late?) and Jane. Esther and Kendal – I could have called that bottom two from a mile away. I wanted Kendal gone, because I see more potential in Esther. And Tyra chose Esther to stay. Kendal was always sort of middle-of-the-pack, so it was time for her to go.

Did you like the episode? Which photo did you like the best? Will Ann be back on top next week, or do we finally have a competition?
