Annapolis County RCMP continue to investigate serious collision, Annapolis County, N.S.

Annapolis County RCMP continue to investigate a serious collision involving a car and horse-drawn wheeled-sleigh on New Year’s Eve.

At approximately 6:50 p.m. on December 31st, Annapolis County RCMP with the assistance of Kingston RCMP, Kingston and Middleton Fire Departments, Department of Transportation and EHS responded to a collision at the intersection of Bayard Road and Highway #1 involving a horse-drawn wheeled sleigh with a driver and 19 passengers, and a single vehicle with one female occupant.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 25-year-old female driver from the Annapolis Valley area was traveling in a small car east on Highway #1 in an 80 km/hr zone when the vehicle she was driving struck the rear end of a sleigh as it crossed Highway #1. The sleigh ride tour regularly travels a set route on an old railway bed which is now primarily used as an ATV trail and crosses Highway #1.

Of the 19 passengers on the sleigh, five were sent to hospital via ambulance and the remaining 14 were examined by paramedics at the scene as a precaution. A 58-year-old female from the Annapolis Valley area remains in hospital in serious but stable condition. The sleigh operator and driver of the car were not injured.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation. An RCMP traffic analyst is assisting Annapolis RCMP.
