Appeal Board Rules in Case of 35 Dogs

The Nova Scotia SPCA was awarded legal custody of the 35 dogs and their puppies seized on December 10, 2019.

The provincial Department of Agriculture’s three-member Appeal Board heard from the SPCA and the dogs’ owner, Karin Robertson on December 30, 2019. The Appeal Board rendered its decision late today, January 2, 2020, upholding the lawfulness of the seizure.

“We’re happy we were able to ensure the safety of these animals. This is just the first step. Charges have been laid and we will move ahead with the court process,” said Jo-Anne Landsburg, Nova Scotia SPCA Chief Provincial Inspector.

The dogs’ owner, Robertson, was charged with failing to comply with all reasonable directions of the inspector or peace officer 20(5)(b) to bring the environment of the animals up to minimum standards and for causing an animal to be in distress through her actions 26(1) under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia. She is scheduled to appear in Kentville Provincial Court on January 21, 2020, at 9:30.
