Recently I’ve watched:

Call the Midwife – Seasons 4 & 5
13 Reasons Why
Riverdale

But now I don’t know where to turn… I feel a little lost. Like when you finish a good book and you want to make sure your next read is as good as the last one.

Here is a preview of what’s coming to Netflix in May:

Highlights for me? Last two episodes of Riverdale, Season 3 of Bloodline, and… wait for it… Season 5 of HOUSE OF CARDS! Looks like I won’t be feeling lost for long. Time to reconnect with some old friends!

My Life Is Like A Telenovela #streamteam #ad https://haligonia.ca/my-life-is-like-a-telenovela-streamteam-ad-184405/ Tue, 28 Feb 2017 19:13:00 +0000 https://haligonia.ca/?guid=8ecbb26c4948878ca2966e3b8a051f2e

Never a dull moment around here.

My teenage daughter is not speaking to me at the moment. You see, I made a serious error in judgment and now she can’t find it in herself to forgive me. What did I do to deserve such treatment? I cheated on her… Netflix cheated to be exact.

Yes, it’s a thing. You see, we started watching Jane the Virgin together and are both in love with the series. But the thing is… there was this one night that she was at dance class and I wasn’t feeling well so I crawled into bed with my computer to pass the time away until I felt better. But what could I watch? I didn’t want to “take on” another series and I was hoping to be asleep soon so a movie was too long. So I did. I watched ONE episode without her.

I confessed immediately when she got home, I figured she could catch up easily by the next time we were ready to watch another episode together. And that is when she stopped talking to me. Outraged that I could commit such an unimaginable offence.

But I’m glad to know I’m not the only cheater out there. Netflix recently uncovered that 46% of global viewers are cheating right now… with their favourite Netflix shows. How do Canadians stack up against their neighbours around the world? Turns out we are a little less polite than you may think, with over a third (37%) of couples streaming behind each other’s backs. See? It could be worse, I could be Netflix cheating on my husband… that wouldn’t happen, we rarely watch the same shows. (Me: Call the Midwife. Him: The Walking Dead).

So back to my insulted teen… not sure what I will do to make up for this infidelity but I hope she forgives me soon as I am missing Rogelio, Xiomara and the rest of the Jane the Virgin gang so I’m on the verge of cheating again… it’s just like a telenovela around here!

What We’re Watching #netflix #streamteam https://haligonia.ca/what-were-watching-netflix-streamteam-180982/ Thu, 26 Jan 2017 19:04:38 +0000 https://haligonia.ca/?guid=1f1f44af4c1eaa0069d16a3542d35583

So it’s a new year and time for some new Netflix shows to entertain the kiddies when it’s too cold outside to play.

Netflix knows that we all love a good princess, and there’s nothing wrong with a happy ending, but the reality is kids today are gravitating toward grown-up stories. That’s why Netflix is reinventing family TV with shows like Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events which premiered on January 13. The show serves up dark comedy that your big kids are probably ready for, whether you realize it or not. Mine were!

Based on the internationally best-selling series of books by Lemony Snicket (aka Daniel Handler) and starring Emmy and Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans — Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – whose evil guardian Count Olaf will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. The siblings must outsmart Olaf at every turn, foiling his many devious plans and disguises, in order to discover clues to their parents’ mysterious death. The eight-episode series is a Netflix original production.

This is my daughter, Maddie McKee, aged (almost) 11. She is a Netflix lover and a self-professed TV Show Critic. Here are her thoughts about Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events:

“I think it was really good and I hope more episodes come out soon. It was kind of funny but serious too. Count Olaf followed them everywhere. I also liked how the kids could speak “baby” to their little sister. It wasn’t a scary show, it was more odd! I recommend it to kids who like mystery and weirdness and are aged 10 and up. I wouldn’t recommend that my Mom watch it… it has snakes and reptiles in it. She would freak!”

To get you ready for lots of Netflixing this winter, here is a great chart to keep on hand so when you hear someone mention a great show they’ve watched on Netflix, you can jot it down for later! Download yours here!

Download And Go With #netflix This Christmas #streamteam https://haligonia.ca/download-and-go-with-netflix-this-christmas-streamteam-176980/ Tue, 20 Dec 2016 19:28:32 +0000 https://haligonia.ca/?guid=5fee3cae91ddc31c05717a4d73ea43ee

If you’re like us, you’re probably going to hit the road to travel somewhere this Christmas. For us, it’s a four hour drive to Cape Breton between Christmas and New Years. So the big question is… how are we going to keep the kids occupied?

I mean… NO WIFI for four hours… it’s enough to incite panic in the younger members of the family. Ok, and parents too! But no worries, Netflix has you covered.

Just in time for long holiday trips, Netflix recently announced that members can now download many of their favourite series and movies at no extra cost. To start downloading today, make sure your Netflix app is updated to the latest version and head to the ‘Available for Download’ menu on your tablet or mobile device.

Ta da! It’s a Christmas miracle!

Here are some festive ideas so start downloading.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, starting December 23rd, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Television will treat families to 13 hours of adventure, suspense and limitless imagination with the all-new series DreamWorks Trollhunters.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, safe travels and happy downloading. See you next year!

Ingredients
  1. 1 cup (250 g) PC® Organics Unsalted Fresh Churned Butter, softened
  2. 3/4 cup (175 mL) icing sugar
  3. 1 tsp (5 mL) pure vanilla extract
  4. 1-½ cups (375 mL) PC® Organics Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
  5. ½ cup (125 mL) cornstarch
  6. ½ tsp (2 mL) kosher salt
  7. 1 bar (100 g) PC® Organics Mint European Dark Chocolate, finely chopped
  8. ¼ cup (50 mL) granulated sugar
Instructions
  1. Place butter, icing sugar and vanilla in stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment (or bowl with electric mixer). Beat on medium-high speed 2 to 3 minutes or until creamy and light in colour. In separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch and salt; add half to butter mixture and beat on low speed just until combined. Add remaining flour mixture; beat just until combined. Beat in chocolate.
  2. Divide dough in half; place each half on a piece of plastic wrap; using plastic wrap, roll each into a tight log about 6 inches long. Chill 1 hour or until firm.
  3. Preheat oven to 325˚F (160˚C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  4. Remove one log from refrigerator; unwrap and cut crosswise with sharp knife into 12, 1/2–inch thick slices. (If dough crumbles from chocolate pieces, just press back into an even shape.) Dip each slice into granulated sugar to coat all over; place on one prepared baking sheet.
  5. Bake in centre of oven 15 to 18 minutes or until light golden at edges and baked through. Cool on sheets on rack.
  6. Repeat with remaining dough. Discard any remaining granulated sugar.
