Bears sighted in Ravines and Papermill Subdivisions

At 12:40 p.m. Halifax Regional Police responded to a report of a bear in the neighbourhood of Southgate Drive, in the Ravines of Bedford.

While responding to this call, five separate calls were received from residents in the area. The sightings were of two bears. One appeared to be a cub. Sightings of the bear were on Wyatt Road and Moirs Mill. The larger bear was last seen heading in the woods on Lake Drive.

Halifax Regional Police and Department of Natural Resources officer patrolled the wooded area for the bears, but could not locate them.

When the mother and baby bear became separated there was a concern it may cause the adult bear to become aggressive. Incidents of bear sightings appear to be on the rise. It is suggested to call the police. Do not approach the bear.

The provincial Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has responsibility for investigating problem bear situations.

DNR reports that bears can be attracted to garbage, compost, pet food, bird feeders and barbeque grills that are not properly cleaned.

Bear sightings in residential communities and near homes should be reported to DNR, where trained staff will determine the appropriate action.

During business hours, call the local Natural Resources office in Waverley at 861-2560. After hours, on weekends and holidays, call toll free 1-800-565-2224.
