Bedford may host 2010 hockey games at new arena

A new four-pad arena could be hosting hockey games by 2010 if federal-provincial infrastructure dollars flow soon to address spending priorities set by Halifax Regional Council.

The long-awaited arena topped the priority list because the project can meet the criteria of the economic stimulus fund, including a provision that projects be substantially completed by March 31, 2011. The total estimated cost of the arena is $40.4 million. A funding application will be forwarded today.

The Hammonds Plains Road site was selected from proponents who responded to the Expression of Interest Call in January of 2008, and who subsequently were short-listed and invited to submit proposals through the Request for Proposals process to construct the arena.

A new central library and an additional ferry for the Woodside route top the priority list for money available through the Build Canada Major Infrastructure Component. The cost of the library is estimated at $55 million; the new Woodside ferry is estimated at $12 million.

“These projects will add to the quality of life of HRM residents, and inject money into the local economy throughout their construction and thereafter,” said Mayor Peter Kelly.

In addition to the top priorities, a list of 16 other projects will also be forwarded for consideration under Build Canada. All projects supported by the infrastructure component must be completed by 2015.

While the exact allocation to HRM from infrastructure funding sources is not known, it is anticipated that the municipality could receive sufficient amounts, when combined with municipal cost-sharing, to bring at least the top three projects to fruition.

Strategic investments in infrastructure and transit enhancements are among Halifax Regional Council’s stated focus areas for this term.
