First look: Bedford terminal for new proposed fast ferry will include library, community space

Plans continue to establish a new commuter ferry route between Bedford and downtown Halifax, providing a fast, sustainable, and convenient transportation option for residents and commuters. The project aims to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions while improving accessibility between the two locations. With the support of the government and the completion of necessary design work, the new ferry service is expected to be operational by 2027, offering an alternative mode of transportation for the growing population in the region.

“The market study is complete and preliminary design of both of the terminals and the ferries are complete” says Tim Outhit, councillor for district 16 Bedford-Wentworth.

Funding applications have been sent to the province and federal government for assistance. The Bedford terminal will have community and library spaces funded by HRM. They also plan to build a new road and bridge to make it easier for cars, buses, bicycles, and people to reach the Bedford waterfront.
