Boardwalk Empire: Meet Chalky White

Omar stole the show this week.

I’ll keep this review short, since it’s several days late. That should tell you something about my feelings toward Boardwalk Empire – I’m not rushing home to watch it the way I do for Dexter. And this week, I realized what my problem is. There’s a voice in the back of my head that keeps piping up during episodes of Boardwalk Empire and saying “This still isn’t as good as The Wire.”

I don’t want to compare the two shows. It just happens. I’m sure fans of The Sopranos are doing it too, with whatever outcome. But I’m a die hard fan of The Wire, the shows are kind of similar, Omar Little is in both, and Boardwalk Empire just isn’t measuring up. And it’s preventing me from becoming fully committed.

This weeks episode was good – especially the Chalky White stuff – but it felt a little muddled. There are a lot of characters in a lot of different cities. You’ve got the Atlantic City stuff, the Chicago stuff, the New York stuff. It’s a bit much. How do all the characters connect?

I’ll tell you what else I like. I like Nucky, I like how Margaret is being drawn into his fancy, shiny world. I like Jimmy, but I find his storyline overly complicated. I’ll keep watching, but I’m certainly not one of the people touting this show as next year’s Emmy darling.
